Used Jeep Dealership Please, browse this site which is dedicated to one of the first mass marketed SUVs (before the term was coined), the Jeep Wagoneer. Produced for 29 years, (1963-1991) the Wagoneer is the longest domestically produced vehicle on the same platform. It is also the 3rd longest running vehicle in US automotive history.

Jeep Wagoneer History

The Jeep Wagoneer has a long and storied history, impacting not only the luxury 4X4 market but also the Jeep brand and the automotive industry as a whole. During the early years of its production, other SUVs were primary offered as more utilitarian type of vehicles without what were considered luxuries at the time, such as power steering, an automatic transmission and detailed interior trim features. The Jeep Wagoneer was one of the first vehicles to offer these and other featured, helping to shape and pioneer the SUV market as we know it today.

Willys Jeep Station Wagon

The Jeep Wagoneer originally evolved from the Willys Jeep Station Wagon (pictured to the right) which itself was developed from the popular Willys Jeep after its use during WWII. Like the Wagoneer the Willys Jeep Station Wagon is considered one of the first SUVs and featured many "high-end" automotive features. Both of these vehicles supported the trends of the time following the war and use of automobiles in every day life.

Despite minor cosmetic changes through its long production run, the Jeep Wagoneer was actually made by four different automobile manufacturers. Starting with Willys-Overland Motors in the early 1960s however was purchased by Kaiser Jeep Corporation and changed their name from Willys Motors to Kaiser-Jeep. American Motors Corporation (AMC) bought Kaiser-Jeep in 1970 and helped to lower costs of production of the Jeep Wagoneer by increasing manufacturing efficiency. In 1987 Chrysler acquired AMC and made style changes that have left the 1987-1991 model years labeled as the best Wagoneer models to own. This included upgraded wood siding and other modern aesthetics.

Jeep Wagoneer

Originally the Wagoneer was offered as a two wheel drive vehicle and also came with a two door option. These were not popular and were phased out in 1967 and 1968 respectively. Additionally after AMC took over from 1971 all Wagoneers were outfitted with more powerful AMC engines and featured more off-road capable suspension.

Jeep Cherokee

Cherokee & Grand Cherokee

In 1984 the Jeep Wagoneer was renamed the Grand Wagoneer to distinguish it from the Jeep Wagoneer XJ which was a smaller model which eventually evolved into the Jeep Cherokee. The Grand Wagoneer was still produced however limited to one model, the Limited. This larger sized Wagoneer would run through 1991, however the nameplate would briefly be used to describe the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer (ZJ) in 1993. This was quickly changed to the Jeep Grand Cherokee which is still in production today. Since 1993 and the Grand Wagoneer platform days the Grand Cherokee has gone through four generational changes, staring as the ZJ, moving to WJ from 1999-2004 and eventually to the WK and WK2 of today.

Today the Jeep Grand Wagoneer remains a classic with an intact group following and clubs all around the world.
